About
Ojo Caliente (Spanish for 'hot eye') has been attracting visitors to its geothermal hot springs in the New Mexico high desert since 1868, making it the oldest health resort in the United States. The springs produce four chemically distinct types of mineral water — iron, soda, arsenic, and lithia springs — each with different therapeutic properties that have been recognized by the Tewa people of this region for centuries before the first bathhouse was built. The wood-fired sauna and mud bath facilities complement the outdoor hot spring pools, while the Tierra Negra mud wrap is the signature treatment using local volcanic mineral clay. Cliff-top yoga, labyrinth walking, and the surrounding Chama River canyon landscape add to the spiritual dimension. The property has been expanded carefully over 150 years while preserving the historic bathhouse buildings.
